Welcome to Sociological Explorations. Here I’ll be sharing thoughts, observations, and commentary on my ongoing research projects. I am a big believer in the Foucauldian project of the ‘history of the present’ – in seeking to better understand the present by searching through the past. That is what I am trying to do with my thesis project, which seeks to answer the question: how and through what processes did we come to a historical moment in which it is possible to describe school discipline as being ‘in crisis’?

I am also fascinated by the experiences of people living within virtual worlds. Second Life is perhaps the most famous example of a virtual world – a space in which people congregate in avatar form to create, to communicate, and, most importantly, to build lives.

So there you have it. History and the present. Archival research and digital ethnography. It’s a strange combination but it provides a unique insight into how we live now.
